Dr
Z, Mercury Retrograde, and Mercury's Dime
I admit it... it had been a particularly "challenging"
Mercury Retrograde this time around... at least it had for me.
I'd
chalked it up to a fairly significant "freshening up"
of my articles on the concept of Mercury Retrograde and about honoring
Mercury and looking expectantly for Mercury's vital gifts during
Mercury Retrograde.
Most
astrologers tend to write about the archetypal energies and effects
of a particular planet, when that particular planet is in some way
effecting and/or impinging (or about to impinge) upon our own personal
charts. We then have the opportunity to live up to our own words
(or not).
It's
the planet's special way of saying: "Put up or shut up!"
This
specific Mercury Retrograde had not been an exception to this general
rule of thumb. So it was fun receiving a modest, but knowing, wink
from Mercury.
Here's
The Skinny
It was late morning... and down the hall Jennifer could be heard
struggling with and muttering unspeakables at the
mercurial
Coke
machine, while repeatedly inserting a coin that simply didn't
want to cooperate.
Finally,
after a giant sigh, Jennifer's tiny but rapid footsteps could be
heard echoing throughout the hallway. Peering around the corner...
Jennifer, in her most penitent and persuasive tone of voice, asked
if she could swap me her Canadian dime for a US dime that would
work in the machine.
Not
exactly thrilled
about the prospects of coming into possession of a Canadian
dime (nothing against Canada), I offered to simply give her
another
dime as she quickly slipped her recalcitrant coin in my hand.
I
immediately knew I didn't have a Canadian dime in my hand. What
I did have was an "ancient" Mercury Liberty dime, minted
somewhere between 1916 and 1945. I explained to Jennifer what it
was and then counted her out a buck in change as fair exchange.
Although
I really don't make a habit of checking my dimes out, I haven't
seen one of those puppies for years and years.
Before
you write in informing me that the Mercury Liberty dime isn't
really a Mercury dime, I assure you I know that this
old 1943 dime, commonly known as a Mercury dime, is actually
sporting
an image of lady liberty wearing a Phrygian slave cap with wings
of liberty.
I
still say that it was Mercury winking at me...
