Mars reflects our assertive energy and how we pursue those to whom we are attracted. Mars is how we go about getting what we want.

Venus reflects the receptive energy we shine out to attract others to us. Venus is how we go about getting others to want us.

Men Throughout history - men have most generally tended to "live out" the energies represented and reflected by the placement of their birth chart Mars. i.e. A man just doesn't feel "manly" unless he's expressing his birth Mars placement... And men have generally tended to "project out" the energies of their birth chart Venus...

Women Throughout history - women have most generally tended to "live out" the energies represented and reflected by the placement of their birth chart Venus. i.e. A woman just doesn't feel "womanly" unless she's expressing her birth Venus placement... And women have generally tended to "project out" the energies of their birth chart Mars...

on the Hot Stuff!
(Sexual Compatibility)

If a man's birth chart Venus is placed in the sign of Cancer (for instance), he may typically be sexually attracted to women who he (the man) perceives as personifying the energies of Cancer.

If a woman's birth chart Mars is placed in the sign of Cancer, she may typically be sexually attracted to men who she (the woman) perceives as personifying the energies of Cancer.

Another way the Mars/Venus Connection may "work..."
When a man's birth chart Mars is placed in the same sign as a women's Venus, these two people may potentially be sexually attracted to one another.

For example:  a man with his birth chart Mars in the sign of Libra and a woman with her birth chart Venus in the sign of Libra.

Getting Even More Complex
(Sorry novices...) What I've described above uses what are called planetary sign conjunctions. Both of these methods also "work" quite well in determining potential "hot stuff" with aspect (in orb) sextiles, trines, squares and oppositions.

Getting a wee bit "R rated" and personal - this stuff really works... The best "hot stuff" (i.e. great sex) of my life was with someone who my birth Mars was aspect trine her birth Venus and her birth Mars was aspect trine my birth Venus (a double whammy Mars/Venus cross aspect).

That's about it for now...
And like everything else in astrology, all the above may be strongly affected by many other factors in the birth charts of the two people involved. And potential sexual compatibility, as measured by Mars/Venus connections, is only one of many components to be considered when measuring overall compatibility.
